The sweet-toothed residents of Notting Hill have loved her from their first delicious mouthful and she now has the likes of Annie Lennox, Take That, Russell Brand (‘I’m in love!’), and Grecian Princesses amongst her fanbase. Even Scrooge will be licking his lips before Christmas. No, it’s not Mother Theresa’s cook whisking up good cheer, but Cookie Girl taking the world of baking by a buttercream storm.

Otherwise known as Xanthe Milton, (above, left) Cookie Girl started off by donning Alice in Wonderland-esque costumes and knocking on the doors of Notting Hill. To cut the story short, since then her success and popularity has risen as perfectly as her delicious cakes. (I’ve gobbled a few myself so this analogy is spot on, believe me).

She’s just launched her very first book, EAT ME! – a self-confessed ‘stupendous, self-raising world of cupcakes and bakes’. mydeco got in touch to ask her about the launch’s Alice in Wonderland theme: ‘I couldn’t think of a better venue than the Paradise By Way of Kensal Green pub with its over sized lampshades and whimsical interior; it was just magical and fitted with the book’s fairy tale style.’

‘At the launch I read a couple of pages of scene setting [from the book] which made people realise that this was no ordinary recipe book,’ enthused Xanthe. And it really isn’t – from the cocktail inspired (pina colada, margarita), to desert inspired (tiramisu? Yes please!) to seasonal Easter nests – there are 80 delicious and imaginative recipes to drool over.

‘What made it extra special was having so many people there that know me as ‘Cookie Girl’ from back in the days when I was knocking on their doors selling them cookies,’ she added. ‘It felt like we had all been on this journey together.’

British Food Fortnight starts tomorrow: on your marks, get set, eat! 18 September, 2009

It’s time to ditch the diet, loosen your belt and jolly well tuck in, as British Food Fortnight kicks off tomorrow. As the biggest foodie (read glutton) I know, I’m absolutely thrilled.

Over the next two weeks a whole host of yummy events will be taking place around the country to celebrate our fine British fare. With food and drink festivals, promotions, tastings, and special menus in pubs, restaurants and shops, there will be plenty to keep you entertained (and full) for the next fourteen days. And what better day to start than a Saturday, when even the most righteous macrobiotic dieter can usually be tempted to a street-side cafe for a lazy brunch?

I for one will be doing what any decent patriot would do: stuffing my face in honour of my homeland’s quaintest quintessential treat – the afternoon tea. I’ve got a ton of Sophie Conran recipes lined up, a bunch of friends turning up at four o’clock tomorrow afternoon, and a morning blocked out to spend indulgently covered in flour. My hungry friends will be greeted by scones, sandwiches and other sticky creations piled high on my beautiful cake stand from Not on the High Street (above).

And what tea party would be complete without a stylish teapot to hold the soothing,  problem-solving, magic elixir itself? I can’t wait to show off my new tea set from Not on the High Street (above) – simple, classic, but with a quirky silhouette.

When it comes to my cups, I favour a charming mish-mash of retro polka dots and country-style chintz. My favourite investment is still my set of Cath Kidston spray flowers cups and saucers. Delicate and pretty, they turn even my loudest friends into demure, polished ladies with one sip from their painted rims.

Right I’m off to raid the market for my ingredients. And if you’re thinking of shirking British Food Fortnight in favour of a diet, remember: your country needs you!

We all like a good bargain. And if you like them in-season, high quality, designer and fabulous then you’ll love a mydeco bargain.

Every day, the mydeco deal barons are hunting out the best bargains from your favourite homeware stores. None of this 10% silliness which your wallet hardly notices but a whopping 50% at the very least.

Deal-of-the-day-cake-stand-from-Watts-London

This week we’ve struck gold – literally – with an ornate Kinnersley cake stand from Watts London, made with 22 carat gold and now only £90 (was £180). It’s our Deal of the day for hundreds and thousands (I couldn’t resist) of reasons on top of the huge price cut. Being design fiends, we love it because it also combines the key trends of 2009.

The cup cake, in all its tasty, creative and evocative glory, has become the must-have snack this year. With cute and quirky cup cake boutiques and even cup cake hostesses (the perfect job?) becoming more and more popular, this cake stand pays homage in true tasty style.

Flock wallpaper has been another key trend this year and the Kinnersley pattern draws upon the original wallpaper designs of George Frederick Bodley, the founder of Watts London. And if all this isn’t tempting enough, it’s half price. Go on – treat your taste buds and your recession-weathered purse.

Yesterday, mydeco’s lovely Jessica spotted the Sony Vaio CP1 photo frame at House of Fraser for only £99 (was £199.99). At less than half the original price this is a brilliant deal. For Christmas, for birthdays – for capturing your new cake stand laden with treats…

The Sony photo frame will play all your pictures and memories wirelessly from a PC and you can also share them with your friends using Picassa Web Albums.

With deals this good and at such knocked-down prices they won’t stay in stock for long. I ordered mine quicker than you can lick the icing off a cake. For more hot deals look at our Deal of the day or go to our sales and special offers pages. For a comprehensive guide, from half price candle holders to discounted sofas, mydeco outlet is your one-stop shop with bargains from over 40% off.
