The fastest furniture in the world? 27 January, 2010

If we told you there was a sofa that could travel at up to 90 miles per hour, would you believe us?

Well you should.

Because now, a dining table is hot on its trail as the contest for the world’s fastest furniture continues. According to the BBC, British inventor Perry Watkins, who already holds the record for the world’s smallest and flattest cars, is almost finished creating his super speedy dining table, “Fastfood”. Who knew inventors could be so witty?

The current world record for the fastest piece of furniture is held by Edd China and Marek Turosk, from Leicestershire, whose toilet reached speeds of up to 92mph. (We reluctantly note that this strange obsession with fast furniture seems to be a singularly British pastime. It’s DIY gone mad.)

Perry has his sights on the trophy, telling the BBC,  “Fastfood is about three quarters finished now. It’s a Reliant Scimitar Sabre sports car chassis with a three and a half litre V8 engine with nitrous oxide injection. It should do 0-60 in about four seconds and about 160mph top speed.”

Sound a bit pro? You will be surprised to hear that he is, in fact, not an inventor by trade but a shoe repairer.  “I just started off tinkering with bicycles, mopeds, bikes, and progressed to cars…  I’m completely self taught,” he says.  “If I don’t know how to do something I’ll just ask someone or look it up on the internet”. Who knows what you could become with a little help from the guys at Google?

It gets weirder: Perry has a small mannequin driver for the dining vehicle, named Pete.  “Pete sits at the head of the table and he’s dressed in full race uniform. He’ll have a full face crash helmet with a black visor so he’ll appear to be driving the car,” explained Perry.

In 2007, mechanic Paul Sender debuted the world’s fastest toilet. The jet-propelled lavatory could reach speeds of up to 70 miles per hour.

When mydeco stocks fast furniture, we will be sure to let you know. Don’t hold your breath…
