Times are good if you’re a knackered chair with a famous owner. This week, a battered leather sofa that once belonged to Winston Churchill was sold for £7,500 in Northamptonshire. The ripped Chesterfield sofa, originally valued at just £80, was heading for the skip when someone revealed it had belonged to Churchill while he was prime minister (between 1951 and 55). Phone calls from interested buyers worldwide flooded in.

Churchill was in good company; I’ve always had a soft spot for the Daisy Chesterfield sofa from Leigh Harmer as shown below.

Meanwhile, a bidding frenzy broke out on eBay this week when JK Rowling’s dining chair went for nearly £20million in the auction; it had a thistle on the seat and was signed with her message, ‘While sitting on this chair, I wrote Harry Potter’. Rowling used the chair in her Edinburgh flat when writing the wizard series. The author donated a signed letter saying: ‘My nostalgic side is quite sad to see it go but my back isn’t.’ A percentage of the proceeds will go to charity Books Abroad, who supply books to kids in struggling schools worldwide. Magic.
