Shrinking Sheep! 3 July, 2009

I’ve heard of woolly jumpers shrinking in the wash but not the actual sheep! Bizarrely enough, climate change is shrinking sheep. As strange as this sounds, it’s actually backed up by scientific research which began all the way back in 1985. After decades of study the boffins have found that Soay sheep, a wild breed in Scotland, have shrunk by 5%. Before climate change, the sheep needed to be bigger during the winter in order to survive but now that grass is available for longer in the year it isn’t as crucial for them to fatten up. Hardly ground breaking news but they were excited – Professor Tim Coulson, lead researcher for the study, told the BBC that “it’s too early to say if, in 100 years, we will have chihuahuas herding pocket-sized sheep”. Ha ha baa, what a joker.

You can survive our winters with this Edale wool blanket (£31) from Wallace Sacks. Alternatively, use it in the summer for lazing in the garden or picnicking on.

Hopefully these woollen blankies won't shrink like the sheep!
